The air terminal is located on the area of Licey al Medio named Uveral which is few miles near to Santiago City. This airport began to operate as an International terminal since the spring of 2002.
Originally it was located near to the residential sector of Los Jardines Metropolitanos. The increases of houses and neighborhoods near to it caused the airport to lose valuable space to international flights in addition of several airplane crash accidents on houses and buildings near to the then air terminal. One of the memorable accident ocurred on December 25,1991 a few kilometers away a small plane crashed onto a wall located on the corner of Estrella Sadhala and Bartolome Columbus avenues. Though the airport served for some domestic flights and few international destinations like Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, the terminal never grow in its original place. The habitants had to go to Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo's airports for international traveling. It became a need for the citizen that Santiago should have its own international airport. Many years were spend before the terminal were built on the present location due to conflicts and struggles to make the project happen. A group of the most important entrepreneurs of the town decided to construct the terminal with their own budgets. Even though its construction had difficulties, the airport were terminated by the beginning of March with few flights from Puerto Rico at first and from Miami, Newark and New York later on the same year. The airport is now under development for new destinations and airlines from all part from the world. With this airport, Santiago is connected to the world by planes.
At the present time, the airport serves flights from/to Santiago to Puerto Rico, Haiti, Providence Island, Cuba, Venezuela, Curacaos, Panama, Miami, Newark and New York. There are plans to expand the coverage to another countries and new destinations within the United States in the near future.
